The company's LinkedIn page, employee profiles, and posts all displayed "This post cannot be displayed." The founders didn't know why. Social media erupted with speculation: Artisan's sales agents were spamming LinkedIn users. Platform security threat. Terminator moment.

None of it was true. According to Artisan CEO Jaspar Carmichael-Jack, the actual violations were mundane: Artisan was using "LinkedIn" on its website to describe its data features—essentially trademark/brand use without permission. More critically, Artisan had sourced data from brokers who scraped LinkedIn's platform without authorization. Data scraping is explicitly prohibited in LinkedIn's terms of service. Carmichael-Jack called it "some kind of thing that comes back to bite them from things that they do early on"—startup code for "we didn't vet our data sources carefully."

The company fixed both issues within two weeks. Removed all LinkedIn references. Implemented third-party vendor verification. LinkedIn reinstated them. Crisis resolved. Except it wasn't a crisis at all—it was a signal.
